  1. Hi:
Can you please tell me how you price the food that you sell. Is there a formula? I do not want to guess as to how much to charge the customer. Thanks, Karrie

    1. We look to get a 70% gross profit margin on hot dogs including buns.
If your cost is .75 then charge at least $2.50 per hot dog. We usually mark it up a bit more to account for condiments and your excellent service.

      Here’s the formula for a 70% margin:
      Selling Price = Your Cost/.3

      I hope this is helpful!

  2. Hi Steve, hope all is well with you.I have a chance to do a retirement at a brewery. My friend who set us up told me a food truck wanted $1600. for 60 people. I got off the phone with her ,and she told me a food truck wanted $600 for 3 hours Friday 5-8.She just wants hot dogs onions and cheese and chili dogs. She was ok with the hot dogs I serve Nathans quarter pounders, which cost $114 for a box of 160. She thought$600 was too much. My regular dogs sell for $3 and chili dogs $4. I figure $8 a head ,most folks cant eat more than 2. Should I also charge a traveling and set up fee and an hourly fee (my time)?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for all your help in the past.

    1. Hi Dane,
I always charge a travel and set up fee. If she balks at that, back it out of your per head price. The point is to charge what you are worth. Don’t work for $2 an hour!

  3. It’s been too long since I’ve read these titles. Now when I’m waiting at the bank to deposit my Delish Dawg earnings, I’ll have something to read! 🙂 I used to carry a book with me everywhere, now I three of the best books on my tablet! Thanks so much, Steve! Attitude is everything!

  5. Happy New Year to all my fellow slingers. I plan on starting my hot dog business in 4 weeks. Steve, your information has been a great place to start. I will be selling Sabrett Dogs in a town called Llano, California. Still trying to figure out what products to start with . Beef dogs(natural casing), Bratwurst and Hot links seem like a good beginning. I am not sure which size would sell the most? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Regards,
    Chris

    1. Hi Chris, sorry I just saw this. I think your product assortment is a great place to start. Your customers will tell you what they want. Don’t be afraid to refine/change your menu as you go along. Good luck!
