Wood putty. But recently I heard from someone who used drywall mud with good results. According to him it sands easy and once painted it is sealed from moisture and holds up fine.
No, don’t do that. The firebox material is quite thin and the brass drain plugs are too heavy. They might bend the firebox when bouncing down bumpy roads.
If you cover the cart with sheet metal then automotive enamel should be fine. I wouldn’t use it over wood. In either case it seems like overkill. Exterior house paint looks great and is way cheaper.
Thanks Steve, spoke with paint rep , for sure can not use auto paint or implement oil based enamel. It will not expand with the wood like house paint will.
Hey Steve,
As far as the countertop is concerned did you just use exterior paint for that? Did you apply anything over the paint? I was told by my heath inspector non-porous/non-toxic is the way to go. Just making sure that exterior paint by its self is the way to go!
I just painted mine, but you can add a sheet of formica countertop laminate to the work surface of the cart. You can even make it look like a granite countertop this way!
I’m using a stainless steel top, but I’m curious as to the paint on the sides. I was going to go with white, yellow, and red. It just so happens that Rust-Oleum makes an exterior oil-based paint in those three colors. I always felt oil-based held up better than latex but you are the experts. Feedback?
Steve, 1)Can you have all of the cart painted, but add stainless steel only to the top? I know how easy it is to clean that stuff?
2) Is there any paint that is heat proof and you don’t have to worry about heat from the steamer? I’m not concerned about cost since it would be such a small area to paint.
1. Hi Kevin, yes you can paint the whole cart and only add the sheet metal to the top.
2. I designed the steamer with air vents all around the perimeter to prevent heat build up. High temp paint is not necessary.
Hey Steve,
Did you use wood putty or wood filler?
Wood putty. But recently I heard from someone who used drywall mud with good results. According to him it sands easy and once painted it is sealed from moisture and holds up fine.
Ok thanks
so, I’m assuming that you used exterior paint on the outside of the cart, but what about the inside??
Use exterior enamel paint on the inside too.
Hey Steve idea trim out steam table holes. With brass drain plugs what do you think
No, don’t do that. The firebox material is quite thin and the brass drain plugs are too heavy. They might bend the firebox when bouncing down bumpy roads.
Ooops thanks
Can i put wooden corner molding around all the edges so it looks nice and neat
Sure. That is a great way to hide your edges if they aren’t perfectly straight.
Any problems using automotive enamel.
Thanks Jim

No need to reinvent the wheel here. I make all the mistakes so you don’t have to. LOL.

I was thinking of painting it and then putting a coat of Polyurethane over the paint.
Check with your health inspector before you do it, to see if he will approve it.

As long as the paint is exterior grade you can use what ever you want.
